Welcome to Lymphoedema Wellness!
At your first appointment we will spend time talking about your medical history and your breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery. You are invited to share with me any highs and lows, and this time can often serve as a valuable debriefing. Going through cancer treatment is no walk in the park!
Firstly I will document any medications you are taking, including natural supplements. We will explore if you have any current signs of swelling, cording or other side effects from the treatment, and what you are currently doing to manage any symptoms you might be experiencing. Next it's time to talk about ways of improving and managing lymphoedema or how to minimise the risk of developing swelling. I can show you simple movements and breathing techniques that help promote lymph flow in the body. It is usually a good idea to set some realistic goals and a plan for what you can do at home to improve your condition.
I will then measure both your arms and compare the volume. You will sit comfortably on the massage table for this, with your arms on a box pillow.
Next it is time for me to assess your arms, hands, breasts and surrounding areas, and the condition of your skin. This will be done with a bare upper body, but covered as much as possible with towels. I will endeavor to make you feel comfortable and safe.
Time permitting, and if appropriate, we can continue with some manual lymphatic drainage (massage) or other treatment.
Please wear a top that you can take off and put back on without too much trouble. I have a donning aid if you need it to reapply a compression sleeve.
Next appointment we will have much more time for hands-on treatment!
All initial appointments need to be at least 1hr long.
During our follow up appointments we will assess for any change in self reported symptoms, swelling, texture and skin condition. We will check in on how you are managing at home, and what we might need to do differently. After some deep breathing and a few stretches, a relaxing manual lymphatic drainage massage will be performed, or you
